  On Our 250th

What are your hopes for the United States’ future and American democracy?

Dear friends,

Our nation will celebrate its 250th anniversary in 2026, and there is no better way to mark the moment than to hear from our fellow citizens. As Patrick Henry said during the Revolutionary Era: "The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers and New Englanders are no more. I am not a Virginian, but an American."

Starting today, The New York Historical, Made By Us, and history museums nationwide will be collecting brief notes—from five to fifty words—via a new website: On Our 250th.

Please take a moment and leave your birthday wish for our nation and its democracy. Feel free to browse our virtual sticky-note wall to see what others are sharing—and please invite your family, friends, neighbors, and more to participate.

On Our 250th is just the first in a whole suite of exhibitions, programs, and digital initiatives that The New York Historical will be unveiling over the next 15 months as we become a center of celebration and reflection on this momentous occasion.

      Leave a Wish

With best wishes,
