Jim is an amazing docent.
He knows a lot of stuff but by all means, bring your questions!
There is a lot to see here !
It's been on my bucket list !
Tiffany lamp area. This is very exciting by the end you'll be able to tell her authentic tiffany lamp from a fraud.
You'll hear about the designer and you learn about how they came to own all of these tiffany lamps!
Jewel sculptures! The Objets d'Art of André Chervin and Carvin French Jewelers . So tiny and so intricate!
Women's Area. It really was a delight to see the Billie Jean king area! I didn't realize she had such costumes. They were very special and so dated so it looks super charming and cute. I enjoyed the Liberty Bell tennis outfit. .
The Women's Work exhibition runs until July 7, 2024 . It was very interesting to see so many things that we definitely take for granted.
There are 2 films that you can see there. What is narrated by Meryl Streep and the other by Liev Schreiber!
"Objects Tell Stories " is filled with so many different items with so many wonderful histories and stories!
There's so much to see!
The gift shop is pretty fantastic
and there's a restaurant
and a little café.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Dave M.Asheville, NC04Jan 9, 2024
If anyone tells me they will be visiting NYC and wants to know where to go, I intend to say the first place they should visit is the New York Historical Society (Museum). Don't think this is a half day museum and rush through it. Take the whole day and then go over to the Museum of Natural History next door on some other day if you wish (which everyone visits, me included).
I was taken aback by the richness and of the exhibits and the interactive opportunities. Listen in on a phone conversation between LBJ and MLK, or sit in the President's chair in a replica of the Oval Office. I could go on and on about the various small, yet highly interesting artifacts in this place. So I'll just suggest you take a chance of spending a full day there.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jan 6, 2024
A group of us came for the pay what you wish Friday and it exceeded our expectations. We loved the Tiffany Lamps were my favorite section. So many insightful pieces of art that highlight minorities or people slighted so often in history.
I'd totally come back and see the Oval Office or the presidents room.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Oct 9, 2023
Most people would not think this is an inviting place based on the name. For us, it was a big surprise, especially due to the low expectation.
The exterior alone already gave us a good first impression. We had to immediately take a photo with the full size statue of President Lincoln to the right of the entrance.
It was recommended to start from Level 4, where for me housed the top 2 highlights of our visit: Gallery of Tiffany Lamps, and Meet the Presidents & Oval Office. There were many dozens of Tiffany lamps and a few stain glass windows. Sure, we've seen them in other museums, but the rooms themselves that housed them were simply exquisite. And for the Replica Oval Office, you are actually encouraged to SIT at the president's desk for your photo op! There were also a miniature White House right outside the Oval Office, with all of the miniature presidents standing in front of it. Very cool.
There was no Level 3, just space for staff.
On Level 2, one highlight was the Exchanging Imagination which showcased the works of 2 French jewelers. Each of the 2 dozens or so pieces was eye-popping and jaw-dropping amazing.
Level 1 was the lobby and some garden variety exhibits which you can skip if you're out of time.
It was time well spent. Totally worth the visit.Helpful 18Thanks 1Love this 20Oh no 0 - Feb 11, 2024
This museum is a gem. Spent several hours here with a friend and everything was so interesting. I loved the collections of objet de arts, the silver, and the Tiffany lamps. There was also an excellent exhibit about Robert Caro and his writing process. Some really excellent paintings from, and inspired by, the Hudson River School. Also, not very crowded on a Saturday.

This is a large and very interesting museum to take in. I have visited here many times since childhood and the displays are always such a learning experience of history and a lot to take in! The museum is in Manhattan not far from Central Park. There is art going back to the 1700s and I feel that anyone will have a nice visit here. The museum brings in collections as they happen such as Harry Potter which of course is very late in history so there is so much you can see on multiple visits. JFK, etc. I could go on and on but I highly recommend a visit!

My foodies friends and I were so excited when we first heard of the "I'll have what she's having: the Jewish Deli" Exhibit at the New York Historical Society. This exhibit runs from Nov 11, 2022 to April 2, 2023. Go while you still can! Tickets are $22/adults, $17/Seniors, and they have special tkt offers for children and students. There is also a great deal going on with Groupon, where we got two adult tkts for $18.50...great deal!
From The NY Historical Society:
"Organized by the Skirball Cultural Center, "I'll Have What She's Having": The Jewish Deli examines how Jewish immigrants, mostly from Central and Eastern Europe, imported and adapted traditions to create a uniquely American restaurant and reveals how Jewish delicatessens became a cornerstone of American food culture."
For some of us NYers, this was a walk down memory lane. This exhibit was wonderful and so much fun. Lots of history and nostalgia. You'll want to take your time and look at all the detailed exhibits and videos. We actually back-tracked and went through the exhibit twice!
I can guarantee that you'll want to visit a Jewish Deli immediately after...we sure did! We schlepped all the way to the 2nd Ave Deli for our hot dog, chopped liver, pastrami and tongue sandwiches...don't forget the egg creams! What a treat (both the Exhibit and the Deli)! Highly recommended!
Make sure to stop by the gift store also. They have a special section related to The Jewish Deli Exhibit. So much fun to browse!Helpful 33Thanks 2Love this 32Oh no 0 - 1583832531Jan 21, 2023
I came here for the first time to view the Black is Beautiful exhibition. The museum is larger than it looks once you enter the building. Entry and payment are quite easy as you enter the building and they have a coat check which I availed myself of so that I wouldn't have to walk around holding my coat. There were multiple exhibits on various floors and the museum was packed there were a lot of people in the space.
The Black is Beautiful exhibit was on the second floor. I went up the staircase which is quite grand. When I reached the second-floor security directed me to the exhibit which was displayed in three large rooms.
The exhibit was beautiful it was a mixture of photos and short stories, clothing on mannequins and jewelry.
The exhibit was curated quite beautifully. The whole experience was exquisite. The story showcased the work of Kwame Braithwaite the photo journalist who captured the Black is Beautiful movement.
The Historical Society utilized an app The Bloomberg Philanthropist. The app has a self guided tour for exhibits. The guided got the Black is Beautiful exhibit was curated and told by Kwames son and wife.
They also had a wonderful book to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Black is Beautiful movement.
I ended in the museum store. I wanted to purchase the book but they were sold out. They said more would come in next week!
I'm glad I went I had never been to that museum and I wanted to see that exhibit.Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 4Oh no 0 - Nov 29, 2023Updated review
This update is just a review of ordering online from the museum's gift shop. They were offering a discount three days ago, so I decided it was worth paying for shipping in order to not need to go there in person. The items I ordered were shipped the very next day, and that even included one-day shipping. Also, everything was packed *incredibly* well.

Advance/timed-entry admissions for visitors (including members) are required and can be purchased online.Aug 14, 2020Previous reviewAlthough the museum's interior remains closed, a (free) outdoor (photography) exhibit opened today. It's entitled "Hope Wanted: NYC Under Quarantine". A writer and photographer traveled throughout the five boroughs during a two-day period in April, taking photos and interviewing a diverse array of people. More than 50 of the photos plus 14 audio interviews are featured in this exhibit (the audio is accessible to visitors via their cell phones). Entrance to the exhibit is free, but timed-entry tickets are required to help maintain social distancing.
Here's the link for booking tickets, and the FAQ section also provides pertinent information:

Also; one of their Trustees has arranged for shipments of more than 100,000 gloves and other urgent materials.
Mar 24, 2020Previous reviewThe NYHS is now offering something called History @ Home, a free online social studies program for students of all grade levels. Their educators will conduct classes in real-time on Zoom. They're also offering teacher workshops and daily lesson plans. Sign up for their History @ Home e-mail list to receive more details, schedules and log-in information.
On another note, the NYHS would be grateful for financial donations.Mar 13, 2020Previous reviewThe NYHS will be closed from tomorrow through the end of March, due to the coronavirus situation.
Jan 28, 2014Previous reviewI feel compelled to upgrade my rating to five stars after receiving the Winter/Spring Programs & Exhibitions catalog. What a *superb* selection of events - and the exhibits sound particularly good.
(Update on 7/30/16): Today we saw a record *four* interesting exhibits at the museum. Also; we had a delightful conversation with the very friendly guy working at the desk in one of the exhibits, plus all of the other employees we spoke to (the Security guy, the woman at the Admissions Desk and a few others) were *very* friendly.Apr 17, 2009Previous reviewThe permanent collection has lots of interesting items, but it's the temporary exhibits that bring me back repeatedly. The bookstore also has a good selection of books about NYC.
Admission from 6-8 p.m. on Fridays is "pay as you wish". - Oct 7, 2022Updated review
The largest collection of Tiffany Lamps that I've ever seen.
We were planning to visit this on Saturday October 1, using our Bank of America credit cards for free entry the first weekend of the month. The forecast was for rain the entire weekend, with the museum closed Monday and Tuesday.
Friday walked 30 minutes from our Manhattan Club timeshare. Advanced timed entry tickets, vaccination checks, and mask requirements are no longer required. No line at the entrance.
Saw two films, the New York City story, and We Rise, the women's rights movement, both come with the price of the admission.
Many historical paintings and artifacts from the New York City past, which I've covered in my previous review.
Art of Winold Reiss featured exhibit on ground floor.
When we showed pictures of our 2021 trip to friends, everyone was enthralled with the Tiffany Lamps. I was determined to add Tiffany Lamps pictures to my review this time.
Two large rooms of Tiffany Lamps collection. Glass circular staircase connecting two floors of Tiffany Lamps.
Dozens of colorful stained-glass lamps, put together with the copper foil technique instead of leaded soldered, between 1890 and 1930. Some of the lamps had butterflies, others had dragon flies.
Turned out that we could have come on Saturday, as the rain at 2pm became a drizzle for a couple of hours. Would have saved $34, the cost of two senior tickets, for a bad hair day.Helpful 47Thanks 0Love this 46Oh no 0Oct 29, 2021Previous reviewLong lines at the entrance to the Museum of Natural History next door to check vaccination cards. Here no waiting Saturday 130pm while vaccination cards checked at the entrance.
Tried to get an advanced timed entry on the internet, but they require you to purchase a ticket. Not sure how this would work when you can come Friday 6-8pm when you pay as you wish.
We each had a Bank of America credit card, enabling each of us to get in free, on the first full weekend of the month
Largest collection of Tiffany Lamps in the world. Wife took dozens of pictures, downloaded them to our pc, but yelp can't load them up.
Joyce B Cowin Women's History Gallery painting of a Rosie the riveter lady, but a black lady instead of a WW2 white lady, and wearing a covid face mask.
Loved the paintings of old New York City from the colonial days to snowstorms in the 1950s. Especially liked the horse and buggy days.
Pictures of sailing ships and steam ships in the harbor. One shot of the great fire of New York City. Another of steam ships passing by the Statue of Liberty.
Special exhibit on the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Ginsberg.
Posters of Jefferson Airplane and Fleetwood Mac from the late 1960s, when tickets were $2, $3, $4!
Especially liked the posters of historic figures wearing a covid face mask.
